A quality usb3 7200 drive is all you'll ever need for audio only. You do not need an expensive thunderboolt SSD for an audio record drive.

The question you should ask yourself is how important is your recording project to you? I could see why some people choose not to dedicate a external drive their portable laptop setup because it interrupts their workflow.(a nuisance) Chances are pretty low that a home recording person running several plugins on a small project is ever going to run into an issue doing everything off a fast internal SSD drive though. To some people this is a pretty big deal especially if you are recording others or working on your next album release. There is also a smaller chance the system could interrupt you during the mixing/editing process causing you to lose work you'll done before you hit save. The biggest problem I see with not dedicating a drive to audio is a small chance that your system can interrupt the recording write process and cause you to lose that take your recording. However many people still use their fast internal ssd for everything. In 2020 most all the major DAW makers still recommend a drive dedicated to audio.
